4 things to watch out for in Formula E season 6

Formula E season 6 is nearly upon us. Check out the top four things to look out for as the season unfolds.

The German teams’ battle for supremacy

With Mercedes and Porsche joining the field this year, we can certainly expect to see some strong rivalry between the German teams. The new entrants have actually created a historic moment for motorsport. It’s the first time the four big German manufacturers – Audi, BMW, Mercedes and Porsche – have competed in the same single-seater championship.

There’s no doubt that expectations of a strong Mercedes performance will be high given the way they have dominated Formula 1 over recent years. They also have a bit of a head start on other new German entrant Porsche. Mercedes were heavily involved in the HWA Racelab team last season, so they already have a handle on how Formula E race weekends work.

Needless to say, Audi and BMW will be fighting hard to come out on top.

A charging JEV

As the reigning world champion and the first driver to win two back-to-back Formula E championships (or two championships for that matter), Jean-Eric Vergne – JEV – will be doing all he can to make it a hat trick. With the field looking tighter than ever, he will surely have his work cut out.

A resurgent Sam Bird

After a strong start to the 2018/19 season, Sam Bird struggled to make an impression in later races, finishing ninth in the championship overall.

In a bid to change his fortunes for season 6, Bird has been working on his fitness and has even gone vegan (which didn’t do Lewis Hamilton any harm). The Virgin Racing car also seems to have improved, with Bird finishing top on the first day of pre-season testing in Valencia.

Bird is definitely one to watch and a possible contender for the title.

Closer racing

New rules for Formula E season 6 increase the power level in Attack Mode by 10kW to 235kW, which should lead to more overtaking. Drivers will also be unable to activate Attack Mode during full-course yellow or safety car periods, meaning that strategy will play a greater role than it did in 2018/19.

It’s impossible to call how it will play out but Formula E season 6 is set to be a thriller!
