Mitch Evans stormed to victory in a dramatic Mexico City E-Prix.
Starting second on the grid, Evans secured the lead from pole sitter Andre Lotterer on the first corner and dominated the race throughout.
The victory propels Evans to the top of the championship, ahead of Alexander Sims by just one point, although Evans doesn’t want to get ahead of himself.
“I didn’t even know I was the Championship leader,” said Evans after the race. “It’s nice to have, don’t get me wrong but it’s still way too early – things can change pretty quick, so I’m not going to get too far ahead of myself – things can change race by race.
“I know how tight it is between the top ten in the standings but I’m sure, from one race to the next things are going to switch and change pretty frequently.”
The Mexico City E-Prix win marks Evans’ second Formula E career victory.
Mexico City E-Prix frustrations for Mueller, de Vries and Bird
The Mexico City E-Prix saw a number of retirements. Swiss driver Nico Mueller put it in the wall early in the race after attempting to overtake Mercedes driver Nyck de Vries, causing a safety car to be deployed.
De Vries had troubles of his own. As DS Techeetah driver Antonio Felix da Costa tried to overtake him, de Vries locked up, made contact with Robin Frijns and crashed out of the race.
After also having some close racing with da Costa in the battle for second position, Envision Virgin driver Sam Bird got caught out by the marbles and ended his chances of a podium finish.
Comeback for DS Techeetah
DS Techeetah put in their strongest team performance of the season so far. Da Costa secured his second consecutive second-place finish while teammate Vergne achieved his strongest finish of the season so far in fourth position.
After the race, DS Techeetah Team Principal, Mark Preston, said: “Both drivers and team did an incredible job this race weekend. We’ve got a couple of things to figure out ahead of the next race to give the drivers even better cars. But overall we’ve got a strong package and two of the quickest drivers on the grid so we’re counting on the points to continue trickle in for the rest of the season and hopefully Marrakesh can deliver our first race win this season.”
The Mexico City E-Prix result moves DS Techeetah into fourth in the championship.
