2019 has not been short of standout Formula E moments. As the year draws to a close, we look back at our top five highlights of 2019.
5) Buemi spins out (Diriyah 2019/20)
2015/16 Formula E champion Sebastien Buemi found himself pointing the wrong way during the second leg of the season 6 Diriyah E-Prix. Clipped by da Costa as he entered the Attack Mode zone on Turn 18, Buemi cut across the racing line to rejoin, forcing other drivers around him. Buemi was penalised for rejoining in an unsafe manner and later criticised the Attack Mode location.
4) Last minute di Grassi victory (Mexico City 2018/19)
Lucas di Grassi took a stunning victory in Mexico City when second-place man Pascal Wehrlein ran out of power on the final corner. After piling the pressure on Wehrlein during the dramatic final lap, di Grassi swept to victory just as the cars crossed the start/finish line. The Brazilian described the race as the “best win” of his Formula E career.
3) Buemi puts it in the wall (Santiago 2018/19)
A second entry for Buemi in our top Formula E moments. The Swiss champion had held the lead for much of what was Formula E’s hottest race in Santiago until he clipped the wall after locking up in Turn 7. He was understandably frustrated —French expletives could be heard on the team radio! Despite making it back to the pits, Buemi was forced to retire, making it an afternoon to forget for him.
2) Piquet goes flying (Mexico 2018/19)
A countdown of Formula E moments wouldn’t be complete without a dramatic crash. In the Mexico E-Prix of season 5, Nelson Piquet Jr went flying through the air after clipping the rear right tyre of Jean-Eric Vergne. He then crashed into Alexander Sims’ BMW as he landed and caused the race to be red flagged.
And the best of 2019’s Formula E moments…Mahindra celebrating victory in Marrakesh
Of all the Formula E moments of 2019, Mahindra Racing’s pure joy after winning the season 5 Marrakesh E-Prix is worthy of the top spot. After starting tenth on the grid, Belgian driver Jerome d’Ambrosio battled to third when the two BMW drivers — running in first and second — collided, knocking one another out of contention. This left d’Ambrosio free to claim his first on-track race victory. d’Ambrosio and the Mahindra team were visibly ecstatic and celebrated the win as if they’d won the championship!
Roll on 2020!
We’re sure 2020 won’t be short of classic Formula E moments. We can’t wait to see what the rest of season 6 will bring!
