British driver Alexander Sims took his first Formula E victory in Diriyah E-Prix round two in a drama-filled race.
As cool as ever, Sims did a superb job of managing the race, which saw two safety cars and a Full Course Yellow.
Sims took the win from pole position and is now the only FE driver to secure three consecutive poles before taking the top step of the podium for the first time.
His teammate Max Guenther finished second, securing BMW’s first one-two finish. Guenther is, however, under investigation for gaining positions before the control line during a safety car restart.
Brazilian Lucas di Grassi rounded off the top three and maintained his strong track record of podium finishes.
Disaster for Envision Virgin Racing
Sam Bird went from a stunning victory in round one to a DNF in Diriyah E-Prix round two after a collision with Panasonic Jaguar driver Mitch Evans. Teammate Frijns also went out after losing control of his car.
The team described the race on Twitter as “frustrating…especially after yesterday’s amazing result.”
Champions struggling
Reigning champions Techeetah struggled to make an impression in Diriyah E-Prix round two with both drivers finishing outside the points.
Antonio Felix da Costa finished 13th from 5th on the grid after spinning out Sebastian Buemi in an early collision and incurring a drive-through penalty.
Current FE champion Jean-Eric Vergne fared little better in 11th in what has been a challenging weekend.
